Nature journals provide an excellent way for children (of all ages!) to really stop and use their five senses to discover what is around them. The following is an excerpt from a nature journal I did as an undergraduate student.
"I wanted to do a nature observation at night to see all the differences between doing it during the day versus the night. Luckily, there are enough lights to see the hill across from me where someone lives. It is much cooler than it was this afternoon; however, there is very little wind and the sky is still clear-the stars are out! I see a few leaves blowing across the driveway, and I also see branches moving about. There is an airplane flying across the sky. I don't hear much going on around me, except for a nearby air conditioning unit." -Caitlin Cavin, January 30, 2008
Go outside for a few minutes. Observe, smell, hear, feel what is going on around you. Respond with your reflections of nature in your environment. You'll be surprised how much you notice that you rarely pay much attention to as you do this!
